Trash can to treasure

For Christmas my hubby got me a box of spray paint and a garbage can. I was so excited! Haha when your a DIYer you get excited for wierd stuff. In our house we don't have a cute drawer or closet to hide our garbage. It's out in the open. Our white plastic bin was so gross. It was like the plastic absorbed every stain dirt or food smell. I was sick of it and ready for something cute. Our local hardware store had the trash cans out front and we drove by a small metal shiny one caught my eye. An idea was born trashcan meet spray paint. How easy is that.



This is where it lives now in my house. I primed with killz and a few coats of krylon banner red and done. So cute i love it. It also wipes clean and doesn't hold the smell even when you've taken the bag out.




Tada so wished I would have done this sooner. Think of all the uses for this. A dirty hamper for a boys room. Or a place to store outside toys. So many possibilities.

Love my lighting!

There are a few things in my house that I just love. Things that i think just represent me and my style so well. Things that every time I see make me smile and feel happy. My kitchen chandy is one of those things. I did splurge a little for this bad boy. It was like $130 with shipping. I looked and looked to find a used one but nothing was close to what I wanted or what I was willing to pay. Then I looked on Overstock. They have an amazing selection and great prices. My sparkling beauty looked like this

Pretty huh! The price tag was really great for a piece of this size and quality. You might think I'm crazy for what I did to it. But to make it fit in my space I spray painted it. really they made it very easy for me because they ship it in pieces which allowed me to spray it and then assemble it. Here she is now

Black and white and totally custom. Since it hangs over our table and hardly ever gets touched I didn't even prime it or anything. Just a quick shot of glossy black. I did the same thing to this small plastic chandy from ikea. It goes over my sink. They look great together. Custom lighting is only a can away!

Old fence wood growth chart

I got this idea from Pinterest don't we just love that site! It was from a blog Dear Lillie. Her's looked like this.

I loved the idea of her growth chart one you can leave out in the open and it's so cute. So when my friend gave me some of the wood from a fence they tore down I knew that this was the perfect project for it. I just measured my baseboards and then marked my lines from there adding the 5 inches to make up for the baseboards. I just used craft paint and marked my lines. I didn't want mine to be exactly like hers because my board was old and worn so I didn't want it to look like a perfect ruler. I printed the numbers out on my computer and traced them on the board and just painted them on. So easy. I used white paint cause the old wood was dark and weathered and I wanted to mark my kids heights with a plain old sharpie. It needed the contrast. So here it is I just love it and I hung it in my kitchen.

I sprayed it with a clear coat hoping it would make it easier to write on. I don't really know if it helped but the numbers sure look crisp. This project didn't cost me a dime. I just hung it using the holes that were already in it and just sharpied over the screws so you can't even see them.

You can see where I marked the boys on here. From far away you can't really see them. But I like that and up close it's easy to read. I love pinterest for all the amazing inspiration I find!

Blue to black ornaments

So I changed my tree this year from blue and silver to black and white. So to save money I just took my blue balls(LOL) and sprayed them black with spray paint (krylon of course in high gloss black). I set up this little contraption

It worked ok I still had to take them off and spray the bottom better. But a can of spray paint is like $3 and I have no idea where you would buy black ornaments so this was a great solution. So here it is our black and white tree!

I love how you can totally tell my boys decorated it. My three year old put all those on the bottom so the branches are bending, so cute. I love it and now I feel like my Christmas decor blends in making it feel way less claustrophobic. I may keep it up all the way till New years this time!

A Black and White Christmas

So our tree has been blue, white and silver since we've been married. So this year I wanted to change it up so it would match the decor of our house. So we are going with a black and white theme. I also wanted to try to do this with only stuff I had on hand so I wouldn't have to spend any money especially when things are so tight around the holidays. So I saw on pinterest all these ruffled no sew tree skirts that everyone has been making and thought perfect I could do that. I already had an old tree skirt to use as my base.

Then I had left over fabric from my living room curtains. The white is just a light cotton I use for curtain liners.

So I cut strips about four inches thick and as long as my fabric was. I put on a movie and sat my happy butt down with my glue gun and a cookie sheet on top of the ottoman for a table. I started with the black and white fabric first. I just ran a thin line of glue and then just stuck on the fabric bunching it every couple of inches to get the ruffled look.

The next row I used the white cotton. Same thing hot glue bunched up blah blah blah...

This start to finish took about 4 hours of work. I got burned I got bored but I kept at it till I got this bad boy....

Pretty sweet huh. I showed my hubby when he got home and he said, "You made that for yourself?", looking all doubtful and I laughed and told him no it's for the tree Duh! He liked it then. I can't wait to see how it all comes together. I still have a few more things to complete the black and white transformation but so far I'm super happy.

Potty Mouth!

Ok this really isn't about swearing but it is about the potty. We have three boys in one bathroom. So you can imagine what sort of problem we have in that space. A pretty yellow coating over everything most of the time. YUCK! So to help remind my children of the importance of good aim I strategically placed a little saying I made up. I just cut it out on my silhouette.

It's not a very good pic because we have no windows in this bathroom. and the walls are dark brown. But you get the jest of it. Has it improved their aim? NO! But it is funny so i guess I get a few points for trying.
